Describe the pattern in ordinary words
“I am having trouble getting an erection” is enough to open the conversation. If you can, add when the change started, whether it happens every time or sometimes, and whether the difficulty is getting an erection, keeping it, or both. You do not need to turn that account into a score or guess the cause before asking for care.
NIDDK describes several possible contributors, including conditions affecting blood vessels, nerves or hormones, medicines, and emotional factors. More than one may be relevant. A recent stressful period does not, by itself, prove that the explanation is entirely psychological. Equally, an erection difficulty does not identify a specific underlying disease. [NIDDK causes]
Make one complete medicine list
Include prescriptions from every clinician, nonprescription medicines, supplements and any other ED products. Copy names from the actual containers if that is easier than remembering them. Bring allergies and relevant health history too. NIDDK identifies medication and sexual-history questions as part of assessment, alongside mental health history and possible examination or tests. [NIDDK diagnosis]
Be direct about nitrates for chest pain, recreational nitrites known as poppers, and riociguat if you use them. The medication information for sildenafil and tadalafil describes important interaction precautions; tadalafil specifically lists riociguat. Your clinician and pharmacist need the full list to evaluate a prescription. Do not stop a needed medicine simply to make an ED treatment seem possible. [Sildenafil] [Tadalafil]
Say what you want help with
Erection firmness, sexual desire, ejaculation, anxiety about sex and relationship concerns may overlap in a conversation, but they are not identical complaints. Tell the clinician which part is bothering you and what a useful improvement would mean. You can ask for plain-language explanations or say that a question feels difficult to answer.
If you want a partner involved, decide which part of the conversation you would like to share. You can also request time to speak privately. A prepared note belongs to you; it does not need to be uploaded to a comparison website. This publication has no patient intake and does not assess your eligibility.
Leave with the next step written down
Ask what is known, what remains uncertain and whether an in-person assessment or testing is needed. If a prescription is offered, confirm the exact product, directions, possible interactions and whom to contact with questions. Our follow-up note guide can help you keep track of that plan without changing treatment yourself.
A supplement advertised as a private shortcut is not a substitute for this assessment. NCCIH warns that some sexual-enhancement products contain hidden drug ingredients and that complementary approaches have not been established as safe and effective ED treatments. Bring any such product into the medication discussion instead of assuming “natural” means compatible. [NCCIH]
